Bokeh Image Sample by DXOMark. At present, the Huawei P30 Pro has 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom and 50x digital zoom capability. Let’s start with proofs given by DXOMark: Image source: DXOmark. It can be seen from the figure that its zooming ability is still quite strong. From the perspective to the close-up, although the digital zoom has.
Update, May 1, 2019, 4:24AM ET: More OnePlus 7 Pro camera samples have surfaced only this time they’ve come from OnePlus itself. In a tweet, OnePlus shared three shots apparently taken with the OnePlus 7 Pro’s triple camera.
The three images appear to show three different camera modes — regular, zoom, and ultra wide-angle. The former two we’ve already seen in action, but the wide-angle panorama sample is the first we’ve seen from the OnePlus 7 Pro and all-but-confirms the purpose of the third lens on the triple camera.

It’s hard to make any judgements on the quality of the images due to Twitter’s aggressive image compression, but it won’t be long before we’ll be able to bring you our own thoughts on OnePlus 7 Pro’s camera (and the rest!) with the May 14 launch fast approaching.
Original article, April 29, 2019, 10:02AM ET: The new OnePlus flagship, the OnePlus 7, is set to arrive May 14 alongside a more premium model, the OnePlus 7 Pro. Ahead of their launch, Wired has had a chance to go hands-on with a “near final” pre-production version of the OnePlus 7 Pro to offer some thoughts on its camera.
Best phones with a triple-camera setup — what are your options?
The OnePlus 7 Pro is coming with three rear cameras and will be capable of 3x optical zoom functionality. Optical zoom is a hardware-based zoom solution which offers superior quality to digital zooming — which essentially crops the viewfinder to zoom. We’ve seen some flagships touting 5x and 10x zoom recently, like the Huawei P30 Pro and Oppo Reno, respectively, and many more also boast 2x optical zoom — such as the previous OnePlus flagship, the OnePlus 6T.

3x optical gives the OnePlus 7 Pro that slight advantage over its predecessor in shooting objects at a distance, and the initial snaps suggest its shaping up well (one such 3x zoom example can be seen above). Wired notes the 7 Pro’s zoomed images retain a fair bit of noise but that it adds to the authenticity of the images — they don’t look like they’ve been artificially smoothed too much with post-processing.
Wired also spoke highly of the HDR capabilities, and video captured at 3x zoom. The publication also gleaned some camera details from OnePlus imaging director Simon Liu, including:
- A focus on a simple interface (it’s much like the OnePlus 6T camera interface, apparently)
- 0.3 seconds or less shutter lag
- 10x digital zoom support
- No time-of-flight (TOF) sensor
- Auto HDR enabled by default
- A “more natural” portrait mode

Liu said he believes the OnePlus 7 Pro has “a shot at competing with the first tier phones,” but not that it can necessarily outdo them. “I don’t think we can beat them, but the imaging world is always subjective,” he said. This suggests phones like the Galaxy S10 Plus and Huawei P30 Pro may still have the edge, though the OnePlus 7 Pro could potentially be hundreds of dollars less expensive.
Finally, Liu also said OnePlus is looking to get user feedback on the camera as soon as possible to make improvements for the next device — presumably, the unannounced OnePlus 7T.

All zoom lenses in film cameras and digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are optical zoom. Digital point-and-shoot cameras as well as consumer and prosumer video camcorders have optical zoom, but they also have digital zoom.
Digital Is Software Zoom
At the telephoto side of the camera, the computer takes over and interpolates the results. For example, a still camera may have 3x optical zoom in the lens, but can process the image with its internal computer to 10x. Depending on the camera and subject matter, the software-created digital zoom can be quite acceptable or mediocre.
The Higher the Optical, the Better
The higher the optical zoom, the better the results. In a still camera, an optical zoom of 10x or more is called a 'superzoom' lens. Note that if a still camera is advertised with '10x zoom,' that does not necessarily mean optical zoom only. In many cases, the optical is 3x with the additional 7x being digital.
With camcorders, the optical zoom typically ranges from 10x to 64x, while the digital zoom can go from 100x to 1000x. See digital camera.
